Improving Your Home On A Budget

Save money while making home improvements

Fix it Up

As the economy forces us to manage our money better, people are taking care of more  on their own without hiring outside help.  Home improvement is at the top of that list.  Where once contractors were employed, many people now take care of these things themselves.  This can save hundreds of dollars in labor charges.

Many sources on television and online offer instructions for jobs such as painting, carpet installation, putting in new cabinets and flooring, and new windows.  This helps the consumer by providing the knowledge necessary to do the job and only pay for the parts needed.  Television shows like “This Old House” are rich in information on how to do these jobs.

Unless it is an emergency, try to plan ahead for these jobs.  Overstocked items such as paint and shelving are often marked down to sell quickly.  Being in a hurry can result in paying too much, so do research to find out where the best deals are.

Work on what is already there, if possible.  Something as simple as a fresh coat of paint and changing the lighting of a room can alter the appearance and give your home a different look.  Ask for help when necessary…either with advice on what to buy or assisting in some of the work.  If you don’t know anyone, check with the clerks of the home improvement stores near you..they can be extremely helpful.

If it is a job that requires a contractor (such as plumbing and wiring) do a lot of comparison shopping with the different companies available.  If you go through a private contractor, be sure it is someone who has been personally recommended and has the bonding and insurance required.

These are just a few ideas of how you can improve the look of your home and increase its value without breaking the bank!
