Saving Money On Telephone Service

Many of us have come to rely on the telephone for communication.  Several phone companies have  specials and incentive offers to let you think you’re getting a great deal…only to sap your bank account in the end.  Here are a few ways to insure you keeping connected without your wallet taking a beating.

In today’s world, almost everyone has a cell phone.  These can run from very inexpensive (such as tracphones or pay-as-you-go) to paying for a lot of unnecessary extras.  Watch out for contract phones…they may make it look like that is the better option, but it can cost you big bucks in the long run…especially if you have to break the contract for any reason. Another complaint can be bad reception, especially inside the home.  If you are going to use a cell phone only, make sure it is upgraded to give you better clarity and less dropped calls.

Keep in mind, landlines are not the enemy.  It sometimes seems that way, with all of the confusing language on the phone bills.  However, landlines have come a long way.  Most  companies have long distance where you pay a small amount every month (added to your regular phone bill) with unlimited calling.

One caution, whether you use landline or cell…watch out for unneeded options.  Unless you are running a business, you really don’t need call waiting, call forwarding, and multi-lines.  Phone companies will often make it easier for you to get the full package…so watch out for the sales pitch.

There is also the VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) that operates on a broadband internet connection.  If you already have cable or DSL, this would be a good option..as long as you remember,if the internet goes down for any reason…so does the phone.

The important thing to remember when deciding what phone service to get is to comparison shop.  Don’t jump at the first deal you see, no matter how good it sounds….there just might be a better one out there!
