Trimming Water Bill Costs

Lower Water Bills
Water bills are going up considerably. Looking at ways to cut expenses, it is important to see how much is being spent in utilities. We can’t live without water of course…but there are ways to reduce usage and trim the cost.
Only use your washer when there are enough clothes to make a FULL load. Many people make the mistake of unnecessarily using the washing machine for only a few items. If you need an item or two washed, it can be done by hand, using much less water.
One area of the home that probably sees the most water consumption is the bathroom. Simple things such as not letting the water run while you are brushing your teeth and turning the shower off while washing can greatly reduce how much is being used. When taking a tub bath, only run the amount of water that is needed. Check to make sure there are no leaks in the commode by listening for the sound of running water in between uses.

Save Water Here
The amount of water running from a faucet can be reduced by installing an aerator in the faucet itself. These small, inexpensive devices (from less than a dollar to around three dollars, depending) hook directly on to the mouth of the faucet, reducing water flow. There is no need to run the water continually while washing dishes…and if using a dishwasher, use the same rule as the washing machine…only when there is enough for a full load.
Home maintenance can control how much water your family is using, such as making sure the water pipes are covered with insulation. This lessens the time of water running to heat up. It’s also essential to check for leaks anywhere, as this causes unnecessary water to run in your lines.
Small things can be done daily to keep this expense down. Rather than getting a glass of water out of the tap each time and running the water until it is cold, fill a pitcher with water for the refrigerator. Water from cooking is okay to use for hydrating plants, and the water from washing the car can be used for the outdoors.
These few simple tips can keep your water bill down and go a long way in conserving one of the earth’s greatest resources.

Dont turn your water on ‘full blast’ when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. Just turn it on for what you need then turn it back off. Some people leave the water running the entire time, others may get a cup full and then leave the water off – BIG difference and it really adds up over a months time.
